      Paul Leonard Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio in1925. His father, Arthur Newman, ran a successfulsporting goods store. (9) His mother, TheresaNewman, loved the theater. She influenced her sonPaul to act in school plays.

      Arthur Newman did not think that acting was a promising job. But, he agreed to support hisson for a year while Paul worked with small theater companies.

      Paul Newman's first movie, "The Silver Chalice", came out in 1954, He later said that it was theworst movie ever made. Critics agreed. But his 1956 movie, "Somebody Up There Likes Me",was a success that brought him more public attention.

      Newman starred in over sixty-five movies during his more than fifty-year career. In his career,Newman was nominated for ten Academy Awards.

      Paul Newman was not only a movie star. (10) He was also a political activist who fought forliberal causes. In 1968, he ran for the Democratic Party presidential candidate against EugeneMcCarthy. Newman protested the Vietnam War in front of the American Embassy in London. Heexpressed great pride that he was named on President Richard Nixon's list of enemies.

      Paul Newman also worked on some social issues. In 1978, his twenty-eight year old son Scottdied of an accidental overdose of drugs and alcohol. (11) In response, Paul Newman createdthe Scott Newman Center to help educate children and families on preventing drug abuse.

      Paul Newman discovered his interest in racing cars while making the 1969 movie "Winning”. Heeven began racing professionally. (12) In 1995, at the age of seventy, Newman competed andwon at the Daytona races in Florida. The Guinness Book of World Records listed him as theoldest winner in his race class.
