　　《西游记》(Journey to the West)是中国四大古典小说之—。它是由明代(the Ming Dynasty)吴承恩撰写的一部优秀的神话小说。该小说讲述的是玄奘和尚(monk)在历经种种考验和磨难后，成功到达西天取回真经（Buddhist sutras）的故事。因人物和情节描述生动，《西游记》在国内外广为流传，被翻译成多种语言。1986年，同名电视剧《西游记》播出，大受观众喜欢。

　　Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. It is an outstanding mythical novel written by Wu Cheng'en in the Ming Dynasty. The story talks about the monk named Xuanzang who successfully arrived at the "Western Regions" to fetch the Buddhist sutras after many trials and much suffering. Thanks to its vivid descriptions of characters and plots, the novel is widely spread at home and abroad and has been translated into many languages. In 1986, the TV series of the same title was broadcast, gaining great popularity among the audience.

　　1.第1句中的“中国四大古典小说之一”若直译则为oneof the Chinese Four Great Classical Novels，但经分析可知其实际范畴是“中国文学”，故翻译成英文时增译“文学”literature—同更为地道表达；the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature。

　　2.第2句中的定语“由明代吴承恩撰写的”较长，故将其处理处后置定语，用过去分词短语表被动译作 written by Wu Cheng'en in the Ming Dynasty。

　　3.第3句中的“该小说讲述的是......的故事”译作the story talks about (fhat)...“成功到达西天取真经”是中文的连动句，有“到达”和“取回”两个动作，翻译时可将其译成两个并列的动作arrived at...and fetched..., 但其实“取回真经”是“到达西天”的目的，故译为arrived at..., to fetch更能体现两个动作之间的关系。时间状语“在历经种种考验和磨难后”用介词短语after many trials and much suffering来表达,置于句末。

　　4.第4句由三个分句组成，其中后两个分句语义联系紧密，可作为主句部分，由and来连接两个并列的谓语。句首的“因…可用介词短语thanks to(由于)来引导，作原因状语。

　　5.最后一句“同名电视剧《西游记》播出，大受观众喜欢”的两个分句都表被动，翻译时可用被动语态译作...was broadcast and warmly welcomed by the audience。也可用分词短语 gaining great popularity among the audience表达“大受观众喜欢”之义，作“播出”的伴随结果。
