      原文与解析:

[31]One of the complaints of city residents, notsurprisingly, is the lack of parking. This problem ispartly caused by all the abandoned cars on thestreets. It has been estimated by A to Z Towing Inc.,a nationwide tow-truck agency, that [29]over onemillion cars are abandoned on the streets andalleyways of the nation's cities. Each year, approximately a third of those cars are removed and destroyed. The rest of the cars, whichare not removed, take up parking spaces and make neighborhoods look rundown.

A survey of twenty cities by A to Z reports that as much as 30 million dollars is spent annuallyto tow away and dismantle abandoned vehicles. One city alone, Los Angeles, spends five milliondollars a year to control the accumulation of abandoned cars on its streets. Even though thecity spends so much money on the program, it is always fighting a losing battle as more andmore cars are constantly coming off the production line.

Boston, on the other hand, which spends most of its money on museums and libraries, doesnot appropriate tax money to clear abandoned cars off the streets. In Boston the problem hasbeen dealt with by [30]a non-profit government agency called Street Horizons, which uses themoney from the recycling of metal in the cars to pay for the cost of towing them. The programin Boston sounds good although it has not completely reached financial independence fromthe federal government yet. Until a truly self-sufficient program for removing old cars isdeveloped, it will remain a serious problem.

      29. How many cars are towed from the streets each year?

      正确答案:A

解析:数字计算题。根据one million和a third of those cars可推算出每年大概有几十万辆车被拖走,故选A。

      30. What is Street Horizons?

      正确答案:D

      解析:答案为D。a non-profit government agency不等于a federal government agency,故A错。

      31. What is the problem with abandoned cars?

      正确答案:C

      解析:概括录音开头两句即可得出答案是C。
