　　In recent days, it is becoming increasingly commonplace to see people chew gum in their daily　activities. According to some statistics, Americans, for instance, chew about 1.8 pounds of gum per person each year.

　　Nonetheless, people’s opinions towards it differ greatly. Some who hold the positive view deem that chewing gum is good for one’s dental health by cleansing the teeth, particularly after　meals. Moreover, some scientific studies have discovered that gum chewing helps people concentrate on their work, release their strain, and improve their cognitive performance. To the contrary, others take the opposite side by concerning that it might be unfavorable for one’s stomach to chew gum too often for a long time, particularly the children. In addition, they argue that it looks sloppy or discourteous to have gum in one’s mouth while talking to others on some　professional occasions, like company conferences.

　　In my view, we should be cautious about gum chewing, because too much chewing may cause　damage in the jaw joint. What’s more, no matter how healthy gum chewing proves to be, it will be no match for a healthy lifestyle.
